Everything that glitters ain’t gold.

You’ve probably heard the statement that everything that glitters ain’t gold or maybe it was said this way everything that is good to you ain’t good for you. These are age old clichés that have been passed down for years but why is it that we Christians know these statements but are baffled when we fall prey to them. It’s because what these statements are basically trying to warn you of is to make sure you recognize the blessing of the Lord.
See God’s blessing doesn’t always come in a package we want or think it should. His blessing isn’t always good as we would see it but it is good for us. Sorta like the old school (for those of you who remember) Vick’s Formula 44D. It’s a shame they don’t make the 44D anymore. It was the most disgusting tasting stuff in the world and would put you straight to sleep quicker than benadryl, but it was the nastiest stuff on the face of God’s green earth. It was disgusting going down but by the time you woke up man oh man did you feel better. Sometimes God’s blessing is like that as well. The trick of the enemy is trying to get you to see the short term good while not showing you how in the long run it will hurt you. Think of relationships. You get in one (not having sought God first and not having asked the proper questions to weed out the mess) and in the beginning it looks all good. What you don’t realize is that he is an obsessive, abusive, cheater or she is a nagging, manipulative, emasculator.
The point I am getting at is that you’ve got to recognize up front whether it is of God or not. Doing so will benefit your life and save you years of having to be delivered from the scars that life (or rather you) has put on due to not seeing it for what it is. A trap! A trap sent by satan to distract you so that he may take you out.
Proverbs 10:22 says the blessing of the Lord, it makes rich, and it adds no sorrow. In other words when it comes from God it’s going to add to your life and not cause you pain. It’s going to enrich you and not take away from you. The best thing about the blessing of the Lord is that you can’t do anything to make it better. Think back to when you were a kid. Your parents when they gave you a toy didn’t give you a toy you had to build the pieces of (sure you may have had to put it together like a jigsaw puzzle or before bikes started coming assembled) but everything you needed was there. If something was broken they took it back to the store and gave you one that wasn’t. God is just like that. When He blesses you with your mate you don’t have to fix them or work with them till they become who you need. They come out the box ready. When He opens a door for a job, it’s not going to be a struggle on the job to do your job (even if you don’t like the people on your job [those are probably who you have to minister to] you never struggle with doing your job). When God blesses you with finances (as long as you are a good steward over it) it’s not going to be a struggle to utilize those finances to the fullest.

See we tend to grab a hold of things and call them a blessing that aren’t just because at the time we acquire them it feels good to us or makes us feel good. But those things those feelings are temporal. What God blesses you with will last. Do some investigating into what is coming your way. Ask God daily to direct you to His blessing, better yet ask Him to continue to work on you so that you have a will to obey him. Because if you have a will to obey him you don’t have to worry about if the blessing that is coming your way is a true blessing or not. You’ll find it is the blessing of the Lord because Deuteronomy 28:1-2 tell us (paraphrasing please read the verbatim) that if you obey the will and word of God, that His blessing will come upon you and over take you. In other words you’ll get an ambushed by your blessing.  So in closing examine the things and people that come into your life and don’t look at them through the eyes of your emotion which may cause you to feel good for a moment. Examine them through the word of God and by doing so you will see that blessing of the Lord truly is good to you and good for you.
